Citadel of Saladin Ayoubi also known as the fortress of the mountain. The fortress is located on Al Muqattam mountain, Saladin began the construction in the city of Cairo in Egypt and created a well of 90 meters deep in the rock inside of the castle to protect the army and the people of the castle if water is cut off in the case of war siege. Sultan Kamel bin AL Adel completed building the fortress afterwards and was its first inhabited.
The fortress is also known for its five distinctive gates: Al Mokattam gate , The new gate, Al Wastany gate, Al Qasr gate, Al Azab gate. It is of the most prestigious military castle built in the Middle Ages because of its strategic location, which provides defensive importance because it controls the cities of Cairo and Fustat and so is the focus of attention for tourists in Cairo.
